Wound Treatment Associate Certification Program

The WTA® (Wound Treatment Associate) educational program was developed by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN®) to meet the growing need for skilled wound care providers in all post-acute care settings and to enhance nurses’ ability to provide optimal care for patients with acute and chronic wounds, as members of a collaborative wound care team. The WOCN Society has been recognized with distinction by the ANCC as a provider of continuing education and is recognized by CMS as a resource for best practices related to wound management. Successful completion of this course provides 24 contact hours for continuing education and meets didactic requirements for WOCNCB certification as a WTA (WTA-C).

• Competency skills check for Ankle Brachial Index Assessment – 60 minutes (10:00 – 11:00)
• Review and demonstration of 4-layer multilayer compression wrap application – 30 minutes (10:30 – 11:00)
• Break – 15 minutes (11:00 – 11:15)
• Competency skills check for application of 4-layer compression wrap – 60 minutes (11:00 – 12:00)
• Lunch and guest presentation – 60 minutes (12:00 – 1:00)
• Review and Demonstration of sensory function evaluation using Semmes Weinstein monofilament – 30 minutes (1:00 – 1:30)
• Return demonstration (skills check off) utilizing Semmes Weinstein monofilament – 30 minutes (1:30 – 2:00)
• Review and demonstration of Two-layer Compression wrap – 30 minutes (2:00 – 2:30)
• Competency skills check for Two-layer compression wrap – 60 minutes (2:30 – 3:30)
• Break – 15 minutes (3:30 – 3:45)
• Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT) – 30 minutes (3:45 – 4:15)
• Wound Product demonstration and discussion about supply management – 60 minutes (4:15 – 5:15)
• Discussion of exam preparation – 15 minutes (5:15 – 5:30)


Onsite Day 2

• Guest presentation/Breakfast – 90 minutes (8:30 – 10:00)

• Posttest Blueprint/ Read exam prep – 60 minutes (10:15 – 11:15)
• Lesson Review Questions revisited, practice exam review – 60 minutes (11:15 – 12:15)
• Lunch break – 30 minutes (12:15 – 12:45)
• Wrap Up – discuss role development, certification, and pursuit of continued wound education -30 minutes (12:45 – 1:15)
• Discussion of remediation if needed -15 minutes (1:15 – 1:30)
• Exam 1 – Overall course content – 90 minutes (1:30 – 3:00)

Upon receipt of course fee, attendee will be granted access to all online course modules. The information for accessing the online course modules will be emailed to the attendee within 3 business days of payment. Attendees are not considered registered until payment has been received in full. Attendees will not be allowed to take the exam on the last day if payment is not received in full. Payment must be made in full by 5 PM CST on Monday, July 24, 2023. Attendees cannot arrive late or leave early and there are no exceptions

Cancellation Policy

Refunds, minus a $900.00 processing fee per registrant, will be honored if requested in writing SEVEN (7) business days prior to the start date of the program. Cancellation requests should be sent to jena@whcawical.org. NO WALK-IN or replacements will be accepted on the scheduled date of class.

Certificate of Completion

To receive the certificate of completion and contact hours, learners must participate in the entire online activity and on-site course, receive a passing score of 70% on the comprehensive post test, and satisfactorily demonstrate skill competency. Upon successfully passing, the participant will be granted and allowed to use the designation Wound Treatment Associate (WTA®) following their name at the discretion of the employer. Certification

Successful completion of the WTA course enables nurses to sit for board certification through the WOCNCB® if eligibility requirements are met. There is a fee for the certification exam. WOCNCB® (Wound Ostomy Continence Nursing Certification Board) certification qualifies the individual to use the credentials “WTA-C” (Wound Treatment Associate-Certified). http://www.wocncb.org/certification/wound-treatmentassociate

Additionally, attendees have utilized this as a review course for certification through the American Academy of Wound Management (CWS-Certified Wound Specialist or CWCA-Certified Wound Care Associate). http://www.abwmcertified.org/

Successful licensed nurse attendee will be awarded 32.25 Contact Hours that can be credited toward nursing license renewal. Physical Therapists are awarded 21 CCUs.

Curriculum prepared by the WOCN Society. CMS references the WOCN Society for wound related best practices and guidelines. The Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse Certification Board is accredited by two different credentialing agencies: The Accrediting Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) and the National Commission of Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Candidates from Multiple Health Care Provider Settings (including acute care, long term care, rehab and homecare) have achieved a >98% WTA course pass rate after attending WTA classes led by RitKen and Associates during the past 5 years.
