In an effort to attract and retain more nursing home caregivers, the Department of Health Services (DHS) has launched an innovative program called the WisCaregiver Career Program. DHS has received federal approval to move forward with the more than $2.3 million investment to implement the WisCaregiver Career Program, designed to add approximately 3,000 nurse aides to the workforce, in this high demand field.
The bill allows individuals to invest in their own long term care account, administered by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. Similar to EdVest, authorized parties (such as family members and friends) may also contribute to an account. There would be a tax benefit for contributions. Once a medical professional deems an account holder meets the criteria of needing long term care, money can be withdrawn from the account. It would also be exempt from taxation if used for a qualified use. Read More
Congressman James Renacci (R-OH-16) has authored a letter asking CMS to re-evaluate the nursing home Requirements of Participation to allow for revisions to be made and to give providers sufficient time to comply with the proposed changes. Read More

On July 31, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a final rule [CMS-1679-F] outlining fiscal year (FY) 2018 Medicare payment rates and quality programs for skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). In that rule, CMS finalized some key components of the SNF Value Based Purchasing (VBP) program, which impacts reimbursements starting next year. Read More

On September 29, 2017, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced that people with Medicare will have more choices and options for beneficiary Medicare coverage in 2018. As CMS releases the benefit and premium information for Medicare health and drug plans for the 2018 calendar year, the average monthly premium for a Medicare Advantage plan will decrease while enrollment in Medicare Advantage is projected to reach a new all-time high. Earlier this year, CMS announced new policies that support increased benefit flexibilities allowing Medicare Advantage plans the ability to offer innovative plans that fit the needs of people with Medicare. Data from the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC) and its second-quarter 2017 NIC Skilled Nursing Data Report showed occupancy rates decreased to 81.7% at the end of the quarter, down 100 basis points from the prior quarter and 147 basis points below year-over-year numbers.
