NHSN Clarification – Counting Staff Who Haven’t Worked in the Infectious Period

WHCA/WiCAL reached out to Ashlie Dowdell, Director of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) for the Department of Health Services (DHS) for more information to clarify NHSN reporting requirements.

She stated that DHS reached out to NHSN seeking clarification on the questions about staff being included in the LTC COVID module suspect/confirmed definitions if they were not in the building during their infectious period. NHSN did confirm the “technical” understanding of the definition that we’ve shared in response to questions over the last several weeks, so I wanted to pass this response along to you as well. We will include this confirmation in our LTC NHSN updates to facilities. Unfortunately, this will continue to differ from the DHS definitions for how cases are counted as outbreaks in WEDSS and open investigations on the DHS website.

Please contact WHCA/WiCAL Director of Quality Advancement and Education Pat Boyer with any questions.
