Addressing the CNA Shortage One Trainer at a Time

At WisCaregiver Careers, we are constantly on the lookout for creative ways to address the many root causes of the CNA crisis. In our conversations with nursing home employers across the state, we have heard time and again how the scarcity of nurse aide trainers is a major barrier to employer led CNA training.

Fortunately, many established CNA training providers are looking for part-time clinical instructors and will pay the training costs and, at times, hourly wages to complete the CNA trainer certification. These part-time instructors can “keep their day job” if working as an RN or can enjoy a flexible and rewarding “encore gig” if looking for a meaningful way to fill their days and earn some pocket money as a retiree.

Please note that nurse aide trainers must be RNs in good standing with the State of Wisconsin. They must have two years of experience working as an RN, of which at least one year must be in the provision of long-term care.

In the Madison Area Technical College service area, including Watertown, Fort Atkinson, Baraboo and Reedsburg, contact Associate Dean Kevin Foley (608-258-2356, kfoley@madisoncollege.edu) to learn about their grant funded program which provides:

  • Train the Trainer Course to achieve DHS Nursing Assistant Primary Instructor certification,
  • 1:1 mentorship from a seasoned Madison College nursing faculty member, and
  • Ongoing clinical site support from the Madison College School of Nursing

 

In Milwaukee, Madison, Waunakee, Wisconsin Rapids, Oconomowoc, Manitowoc, and Kaukauna, contact Quality CNA CEO Paulene Kipke (715-281-5064,  Paulene@QualityCNATraining.com):

  • Train the Trainer Course to achieve DHS Nursing Assistant Primary Instructor certification,
  • Flexible work schedules,
  • 1:1 mentorship and ongoing support from Paulene, an experienced trainer and coach,
  • Incoming Instructors co-teach with a seasoned Instructor’s until they are comfortable utilizing the provided Quality CNA Training curriculum and
  • Wages during training.

In Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire, Frederic, Rice Lake, and Osseo, contact Healthcare Workforce Training Director Paula Gibson (715-726-3849, paula.gibson@healthcareworkforcetraining.com):

  • Train the Trainer Course to achieve DHS Nursing Assistant Primary Instructor certification (with a one-year employment commitment),
  • 1:1 mentorship and ongoing support from a nurse educator with over a decade of experience,
  • 1-2 months of paid in-house training on their curriculum,
  • Flexible schedules and training locations,
  • Full benefits package including but not limited to health, dental, and vision insurance, childcare reimbursement, gym/health reimbursement, tuition reimbursement and more for full and part-time employees.
