Lakeland Care to affiliate with CareSource
Lakeland Care, the Family Care managed care organization, has announced its intention to affiliate with CareSource, an Ohio-based nonprofit insurance company. Both organizations sited Wisconsin’s growing aging population, the demand for long-term care services as well as the financial challenges experienced by Lakeland as a regional nonprofit as the key reasons for pursuing the affiliation.
Lakeland currently serves 7300 Family Care members residing in 31 Wisconsin counties. CareSource has over 2 million members throughout the country participating in Medicaid, Medicare and Affordable Care Act (ACA) programs.
If successful, this affiliation marks the third venture for CareSource in Wisconsin. In September 2024, the company announced plans to affiliate with Community Care, another Family Care managed care organization. This affiliation is currently undergoing regulatory review. At the start of 2025, CareSource acquired Common Ground Healthcare Cooperative which serves the state’s ACA marketplace.
WHCA/WiCAL continues to monitor the progress of the CareSource/Community Care affiliation and will do the same on the proposed CareSource/Lakeland affiliation. We will continue to report on developments as they evolve.
